Have you ever reacted in a way that surprised you?
Maybe you snapped at someone you love.
Maybe you shut down and couldn’t talk.
Maybe your heart started racing over something small.
Then later you thought:
“Why am I like this?”
“Why do I react before I think?”
“Why do I feel crazy?”
If that’s you, please hear this first:
You are not crazy.
You are not weak.
And God is not disappointed in you.
What you may be feeling is called nervous system dysregulation.
And once you understand it, everything starts to make more sense.
There was a season when I didn’t recognize myself.
On the outside, I was trying to hold things together.
Trying to fit into expectations.
Trying to say the right things.
Trying to respond in ways that would keep the peace and avoid judgment or rejection.
I often found myself studying people’s reactions, adjusting my answers, and shaping myself into what I hoped would be accepted.
Not because I was being fake.
Because I was trying to survive environments that felt confusing, isolating, and overwhelming.
And yet, behind closed doors, the pressure would show up.
Small things could suddenly feel big.
My emotions would rise quickly.
Sometimes tears would come out of nowhere.
Sometimes frustration would surface before I even understood why.
Afterward I would sit there wondering:
Why did that reaction come out of me?
Why can’t I seem to control this?
There wasn’t spiritual shame attached.
I knew God loved me.
But I didn’t understand why my reactions sometimes felt so disproportionate — why I could hold it together in one environment, but emotionally unravel in another.
The turning point didn’t come from a neuroscience article.
It came through my relationship with God.
During that season, when the pressure felt overwhelming and my emotions didn’t make sense to me, I would go to Him in prayer.
And again and again, He reminded me of the promise He had spoken to me:
“I have a plan for you.
You can’t stop.
You have to keep going.”
Not once.
Over and over.
Every time confusion rose.
Every time emotions overwhelmed me.
Every time I questioned what was happening inside me.
God would remind me of that same truth.
Keep going.
His presence brought comfort first.
But over time, that repeated truth began to bring something deeper — clarity.
As I continued walking forward, learning, healing, and growing, I began to understand what was happening inside my nervous system.
What I discovered changed everything.
I wasn’t “too emotional.”
I wasn’t failing.
My nervous system had been living under pressure for a long time.
And when your body lives under pressure long enough, reactions can become automatic.
But that realization also meant something important.
Healing was possible.
New skills could be learned.
And God was not disappointed in me.
He was patiently guiding me forward — reminding me again and again that my story was not over and that His plan was still unfolding.
That’s when I began to understand something that would later shape the work I teach today:
Healing doesn’t come from hearing the truth once.
It comes from hearing the truth often enough that it becomes stronger than the lie.
Your nervous system is your body’s safety system.
Its job is to protect you.
When something feels stressful or unsafe, your body reacts fast.
Your heart beats faster.
Your muscles tighten.
Your breathing changes.
This is called a stress response.
But when someone has lived through trauma, long-term stress, burnout, or high-pressure environments, the body can get stuck in that stress mode.
This is called nervous system dysregulation.
It means your alarm system is too sensitive.
Not broken.
Just overused.
If you feel like you are always on edge, you may be living in survival mode.
Survival mode can look like:
Emotional reactivity
Anger spikes
Shutting down
People-pleasing
Feeling numb
Feeling exhausted but unable to rest
Your body may still think it has to fight, flee, or freeze.
This is called the fight flight freeze response.
It is not weakness.
It is how the brain protects you.
There is a small part of your brain called the amygdala.
Think of it as your smoke alarm.
It scans for danger all the time.
When it thinks something is wrong, it sets off the alarm.
Another part of your brain — the prefrontal cortex — helps you think clearly and make good decisions.
But when the alarm goes off, the thinking part gets quieter.
This is often called an amygdala hijack.
That is why you may:
React before you think
Say things you regret
Feel emotions that seem too big
Shut down without meaning to
Your brain is trying to protect you.
It just reacts very fast.
When stress lasts a long time, your body releases stress hormones like cortisol again and again.
Over time, your brain gets used to being on high alert.
It becomes very good at spotting danger.
Even when you are safe.
This is why small triggers can create big reactions.
This is why burnout and nervous system exhaustion feel so real.
This is why your reactions can feel uncontrollable.
It is not because you are dramatic.
It is because your brain learned survival.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”
A sound mind means steady.
Balanced.
Able to pause before reacting.
If your nervous system feels out of control, this verse is not meant to shame you.
It is a reminder of your design.
God did not create you to live stuck in fear.
He created your body to move back into peace.
Faith and mental health are not in conflict.
Faith gives truth.
Science explains how your brain works.
Healing brings them together.
You cannot shame your body into peace.
You teach it safety.
Here are simple ways to begin nervous system healing:
Take a slow breath in.
Hold it.
Slowly breathe out.
This tells your brain you are safe.
Instead of “What is wrong with me?”
Try, “My nervous system is activated.”
Language reduces fear.
Pray simply.
Tell Him exactly how you feel.
Worship with gratitude.
Thankfulness shifts your body out of fear and into trust.
It is okay to pause a conversation.
It is okay to create space.
Regulation is not weakness.
It is wisdom.
The brain can change.
This is called neuroplasticity.
With small, repeated practices, you can move out of chronic stress response and into regulation.
Inside my Roadmap to Resilience™ and Pathway to PEACE™ frameworks — both part of the Miracle Power Activation System™ — we walk step by step through this process:
Understanding trauma response patterns
Learning emotional regulation skills
Reducing emotional reactivity
Restoring safety in the body
Integrating biblical truth with brain science
This is not about becoming someone new.
It is about returning to who God created you to be.
If you feel stuck in:
Autopilot reactions
Burnout and nervous system exhaustion
Uncontrollable emotional reactions
Chronic stress and emotional exhaustion
You do not have to stay there.
You can learn how to calm your nervous system.
You can retrain your stress response.
You can experience power, love, and a sound mind again.
If this resonates with you and you’d like guidance walking through this process in a structured, faith-centered way, you can book a call to learn more.
